Mythology Award-Winning Best Friend Bourbon finished for several additional years in Mythology's Specialty Release Dunder Pit Rum Barrels. The dunder pit rum finish provides notes of caramelized pineapple, molasses and cinnamon with a long warm vanilla & tobacco finish.

What is a Dunder Pit Rum Finish?

In 2019, Mythology crafted a special rum using the dunder pit method, a traditional Jamaican style. The rum aged in barrels for 4 years before being harvested, and those same barrels were then used to finish our Best Friend Bourbon.

So what’s a dunder pit? After distilling rum, the leftover liquid—called dunder—is stored in a vessel or, in Jamaica, sometimes a natural pit. Other byproducts are added to break down, and over time, wild bacteria and yeast thrive in it, creating bold tropical esters. When making the next batch, some of this dunder is mixed into fermentation, similar to the sour mash process in whiskey. The result is a rum with deep, complex character.
